THE WORD OF THE WEEK
TITLE: “God Is Always Near” Week 10 – 16 of April 2022
“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.” Colossians 1:9-10
In our cosmopolitan area, all kinds of new ideas, religious doctrines and practices of heretical philosophies have emerged. There appears something for everyone; and herein lies the danger. The claims of newness is not replacing Christianity but rather adding a higher level of satisfaction, fullness and freedom that solves all the problems people face. But, when we have faith and trust in the Son of God, believe in His work on the cross, the fact of the matter is, all the believer needs is Jesus!
The Apostle Paul wrote in-part a prayer above in this epistle to the church at Colossae while a prisoner in Rome back in AD 60. The church had grown as an outgrowth of Paul’s 3-year ministry at Ephesus where the power of the Word and gospel of the Lord Jesus was so effective in Jews and Greeks. So, Paul felt the need to write a letter as a result of heresy, false teachings, Jewish legalism, Eastern philosophy, astrology, mysticism and bits of Christianity. Believers who substitute superstitions, etc. for revelations deny the person and the work of Jesus Christ. This ultimately insults the Lord Jesus who came to overcome such thinking in this world. Paul is such an encourager as he writes this epistle. Paul reminds the Christian believers that, “God Is Always Near”, God has made all things good and God has delivered all people that belong to Him from darkness (v.13). God is forever working on our behalf by Jesus in this world caring for His own. The false teachers in Colossae were trying to remove Jesus from His place of divine preeminence by trying to destroy the gospel message (Grace and Truth). We must be careful to be filled with spiritual wisdom, understanding and knowledge. We must glorify Him with enjoying fellowship with other believers while studying God’s WORD, loving each other at home, faithful employees when we get back to work, and seeking to witness to others about how good Christ is working on our behalf and for others we know.
