THE WORD OF THE WEEK
TITLE: Peace of God, Peace with God and then “Rest of God” 10/07/2021
“Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any come short of it. For the gospel to them was preached but, did not profit them (The Israelites), not being mixed with faith... There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered Hisrest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.” Hebrews 4:1-10
Being a Christian means standing up in the “Rest of God.” In this Hebrew letter of exhortation, it is important to understand the exodus of Israel from Egypt and their unbelief in the wilderness. God is displeased when we doubt, disbelieve or drift from His promises in His Word. These actions cause our Hearts to become hard and we neglect actions of the Spirit working through the WORD of God.
We must understand a few premises. The Israelites bondage in Egypt parallels the sinner’s bondage of today. They believed deliverance from Egypt meant they were redeemed and saved by the blood of sacrificed lambs and the power of GOD. Similarly, sinners who believe on Christ and the Cross today are delivered from bondage of sin. However, the Israelites and Jews, always doubted God, except Moses, Joshua and Caleb. These three were able to enter their spiritual inheritance of the “Rest of God.” Now, see how we can also enter this greater Spiritual Rest.
When we come to Christ in faith, we find salvation rest (Matt 11:28).Lest we fail, we must be careful to continue to believe, not doubt, and stay close to God’s WORD that leads through grace sanctification rest. It’s only as the WORD is “mixed with faith” that it can accomplish its power and purpose. God finished His work and created Sabbath “Rest of God” at creation. God wanted to give all his people His greater rest that has greater power but Israelites could not because of disbelief. Joshua could not give people “Rest of God” so still was available. Years later, when Jesus Christ came with the gospel, the Jews still rejected it. So, the “Rest of God” with power and purpose is still available to us today!
It is obeying God by faith, surrendering, and reading His Word that the rest with power enters into us. Firstly, there is Spiritual rest in believing that brings “peace with God” then, secondly, there is Salvation/Sanctification rest that brings “peace of God” as we mature in Christ. Thirdly, there is Sufficient rest just as God finished His sufficient work; we will finish our purpose and go to be with Him in heaven and be in the “Rest of God” with Him forever. No more struggles and pain!
