What is a Plodder? 10/26/2020
“O Jacob, how can you say the Lord does not see your troubles? O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights? Have you never heard nor understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary…He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless…But those who trust (wait) in the Lord will find strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:27-31
The Father of Modern Mission, William Carey, once said “I can Plod! This is my only genius. I can persevere in any definite pursuit. To this I owe everything.”
The definition of a Plodder is one who is slow moving, steady, and hardworking along sometimes unexciting paths.
Pastor William Carey was born in the 18th Century in the UK. He is well known for his missionary efforts before his death. His spiritual concerns led him to start missionary efforts for the salvation of foreign peoples, especially in India. He wept during his sermons for those whom had little access to the gospel. Pastor Carey came to believe that the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18-20 was a binding command on every generation of Christians.
As a minister myself, travelled to Liberia for a mission trip and like William Carey, I wonder about lost soul’s sake right here in our US and even as close within our local neighborhoods. Jesus asks us to care about our brothers and sister, read and meditate on His Word morning and night, receive instructions to be ambassadors on His behalf in a lost world.
The scripture today is about the prophet Izaiah speaking to God’s people about the Greatness of God! The people were complaining that the prophet did not understand their plight. The remnant of God’s people were residing in exile in Babylon. The nation had sinned greatly against the Lord for doing what they wanted do (like people of today) rather than “The Word of God.” Matt 5:48 says, “You are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” God did not come and announce some actions right and some wrong. Simply, God is perfect and good. We are to be like Him. He will tell us the rest. Now they were living in slavery going through God’s tender chastening. Today, we should not sin, but if we do, God is waiting to pardon us through His providential timing in Grace! Isaiah also was strengthening in the remembrance that Our God is greater than our circumstances. It has been said, “circumstances are nasty things we see when are eyes are not on God.” If we look at God, He will draw very near and reveal His greatness and lead. Keep Proddling!
